The Maldon District has its fair share of famous residents – contemporary names include Eurovision Song Contest winner Sam Ryder, who was once a pupil at St Francis School in Maldon; fashion designer Anya Hindmarch, who was born in Maldon; prize-winning cyclist and charity campaigner Alex Dowsett, sculptor John Doubleday and veteran labour politician the late Sir Anthony (Tony) Wedgwood Benn, whose family home was at Steeple.
