About

Tollesbury's little prison was opened in 1700 and was in operation for around a century as a holding cell for accused prisoners and as a lock-up for drunken locals. Sometimes called The Cage, the tiny building can be found by the churchyard wall of St Mary the Virgin.

The building is Grade II Listed, although the timber weatherboarding was replaced in the 20th century. The pyramid-shaped roof is a mixture of handmade red clay plain tiles and some more modern hip tiles, with an acorn finial. The door has two long hasped iron hinges and a double iron grill. The lock-up is owned by Tollesbury Parish Council and can be viewed from the outside only.
