Maldon Mosaic with Olympic Torch, barge, jubilee crown and more

About

Maldon Mosaic, which can be found close the sandy play area at the western end of the lake, was designed by Susan Mason and created with her friends at the Limebrook University of the Third Age to celebrate Maldon and the significant events of 2012, including when the Olympic Torch was carried through the town.

Inspiration for the mosaic started with one of the oldest trees in the park. You can spot the iconic Thames Sailing Barges represented in the mosaic, along with a heart on the tree that signifies Promenade Park being the heart of Maldon. The crown and 60 diamonds represents the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, also in 2012, and you can see the Olympic Torch itself plus a black cab to remember the East London Cabbies Outing to Maldon that has been a regular feature since 1952.

The mosaic is deep set into a stone-built archway in the park boundary wall, in a traditional grotto. Nearby is a plaque that dedicates the surrounding garden to Terry Rampling - a gardener who worked in the Promenade Park for 43 years and retired in 2015.
