Statue of Saxon hero Byrhnoth at Promenade Park

About

Stephen P. Nunn is a Maldonian born and bred. He has been studying local history and archaeology since his schooldays. He spent his teenage years digging for Victorian bottles along the town’s former railway line. His interest in aviation heritage developed during his time as a Flight Sergeant in Maldon’s Air Training Corps and whilst a member of the Essex Aviation (Archaeology) Group. Stephen is a founder member of the Maldon Archaeological Group.

He writes a weekly history page in the Maldon & Burnham Standard, has spoken about Maldon on national and local television and radio, gives talks and leads guided tours of Maldon and of the River Blackwater on Thames Sailing Barges and has written nine books. Stephen is an Honorary Freeman of Maldon and former Town Mayor.

In this talk he will be retelling the famous story of Earldorman Byrhtnoth and his heroic, but doomed, fight against the Viking invaders.
