About

In a prominent position on the High Street, this imposing building with its flower bedecked balcony and striking belltower is easy to find. The building began almost 600 years ago as the family manor house of Sir Robert D’Arcy, a powerful figure in his day.

However, when the building passed out of the family it soon became derelict. Bought by the Corporation of Maldon in 1576 for the princely sum of £55, it has remained a seat of local government to this day, incorporating a jail and courtroom. The name ‘Moot’ derives from the Saxon word meaning ‘place of assembly’

Tours of the building are led by enthusiastic guides:- see the prisoners’ names scratched on the brick walls in the exercise yard, hear the story of the Maldon murder in the courtroom, and climb the unique brick spiral...Read More
