Gluten Free

One in every 100 people in the UK has coeliac disease, an autoimmune problem which means they become very ill if they eat anything containing gluten. The only way to manage the condition is to follow a strict, life-long gluten-free diet, which can make eating out a bit of a challenge.

Luckily, there are many venues in the Maldon District which are experienced in preparing safe, gluten-free dishes - and can often cope with other special diets for those who have food allergies or sensitivities, such as those who need to be wheat-free, nut-free or dairy-free.

The venues featured in the first section below all offer gluten-free dishes on their menus, but we would always recommend telling the chef about any dietary issues at the time of ordering.

The Maldon Smokehouse
A 10-minute walk from the High Street, at the end of historic Cromwell Lane, is the beautiful riverside setting of The Maldon Smokehouse, with inside and outside seating. The restaurant uses traditional smoking techniques to a wide range of products, including seafood and fish, cheese, charcuterie, duck, chicken and even hummus, coconut and tomatoes. Much of the food is locally sources, supplemented with visits to Billingsgate and Smithfield markets. The restaurant is famous for its boards, showcasing a range of delicious smoked products. Soft drinks are available, but you are encouraged to bring your own wine and beer. Bookings only taken for parties of eight or more. Takeaway also available.
