Churches and Abbeys

Maldon's long history has left the district with a remarkable range of Churches, Abbey's, and significant religious sites. It also has a thriving and diverse community of many faiths.

The District is home to one of the oldest largely intact Christian churches in England - The Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall at Bradwell-on-Sea, which is open daily for visitors. More information can be found at bradwellchapel.org.

In the church of All Saints, in Maldon High Street, is a memorial window to George Washington, whose great-great grandfather, Lawrence Washington, is buried here. Unveiled by an American diplomat on 5 July 1928, the window displays Saint Nicholas with the Mayflower, Saint George, Saint Joan of Arc in the centre.
