Walking is a fantastic, free activity that needs no membership, costs nothing, warms you up and helps you to get fit into the bargain

Better still, you don’t have to travel for miles to find a pleasant stroll or be kitted out to climb Ben Nevis – the Maldon District has lots of short walks right on the doorstep that can be enjoyed all year round.

Our new Walk it Local campaign is all about finding shorter walks that are close at hand and easy going – mainly two or three miles on fairly flat terrain that are not too hard for those with little legs, our furry friends or in some cases for people with slightly reduced mobility.

Each walk has a leaflet that can be downloaded straight onto your smart phone or printed out to pop in your pocket – and you will find lots of suggestions for places to stop if you fancy a coffee or a pint along the way, somewhere to pick up a picnic or a place to finish up with a snack or even a hearty meal!

One of the great things about Walk it Local is that in the Maldon District you are never far from an independent local business, whether it’s a traditional pub dating back for centuries, a local food producer or a modern microbrewery. In some cases, nearby businesses may be offering special discounts to those taking a stroll on a Walk it Local route, check each individual walk for full details.

Did you know that taking a stroll not only helps you to discover new places – it’s good for your physical and mental health as well? Walking creates endorphins that can lighten your mood, it strengthens and tones muscles, helps joints to stay healthy, burns calories, lowers your blood pressure, keeps blood sugar levels in check, helps you to think more clearly and even improves the quality of your sleep.

Tollesbury Saltmarsh Stroll

SALTMARSH COAST WALKING FESTIVAL - 3.4 miles. This spectacular walk explores the historic village of Tollesbury with its bustling marina, historic lightvessel and interesting centre. Passing wildlife-rich saltmarshes, traditional sail lofts, an open-air lido and a village lock-up, this slightly longer walk is packed with sights.
Maylandsea Meander

3 miles. Explore a tucked-away nature reserve that's famous for its butterflies and take in the lovely views from the seawall of Lawling Creek, with its yachts, barges and birdlife.
Maldon Wick Nature Reserve Walk

2.6 miles. This short Walk it Local route is an easy stroll starting close to Maldon town centre, but taking in the lovely Maldon Wick Nature Reserve and part of the disused railway line. Depending on the season you might see rare butterflies, intriguing glow worms, dragonflies, spring primroses and violets.
Heybridge Towpath and Seawall

SALTMARSH COAST WALKING FESTIVAL - 3.58 miles. A slightly longer stroll in the Walk it Local collection, but worth the effort, taking in bustling Heybridge Basin with its boats, sea-lock, water birds and pubs, the seawall with estuary views back across to Maldon, and the historic canal towpath and sea-lock. Plenty of places to eat and drink en route.
A Tale of Three Villages

2.96 miles. This walk explores three pretty villages in the north of the district - Wickham Bishops, Little Braxted and Great Totham. Taking in tree-lined lanes and footpaths, this gently undulating walk is a great introduction to this part of the district, which has many possibilities for longer walks as well.
Bradwell Pirates & Pubs

SALTMARSH COAST WALKING FESTIVAL - 3 miles. This short walk around Bradwell-on-Sea and Bradwell Waterside, part of the Walk it Local collection, takes in traditional country pubs, a historic church, a thriving marina and the saltmarsh coast, including views of the Ross Revenge, once the home of pirate station Radio Caroline.
Burnham & Creeksea Stroll

SALTMARSH COAST WALKING FESTIVAL - 3.5 miles. This short Walk it Local route offers a delightful stroll around the yachting centre of Burnham-on-Crouch and nearby Creeksea, taking in river views along the seawall, birdlife, vineyards and historic buildings, with plenty of refreshment stops along the way.
Woods & Lanes of Southminster

2.36 miles. This walk explores the town of Southminster from its historic church and thatched cottages to the Jubilee Woodland and sculpture park and modern microbrewery. With a walk time of around an hour, and no steps or stiles to contend with, this is an attractive stroll with plenty of interest.
A Great Stroll in Little Braxted

3.3 miles. The quiet lanes around Little Braxted make a pleasant walk with plenty to explore along the way, including a richly decorated Grade I listed church, fine old buildings with decorative chimneys and an unusual miniature railway at Braxted Bakery, where you can also stop for refreshments.
Goldhanger Through the Ages

SALTMARSH COAST WALKING FESTIVAL - 2.8 miles. Explore the charming village of Goldhanger where you can see remains from Iron Age, Saxon and Roman times, an 11th century church and a 100-year-old village pump. Along the seawall you will see a host of wading birds and tiny coves once used by smugglers. Two great pubs complete the walk.
Woodham Walter Wilderness

2.7 miles. This undulating walk explores the pretty village of Woodham Walter and its nearby woodland, known as The Wilderness, plus a visit to the scenic Hoe Mill Lock with its canal boats and wildlife.
Tillingham Village & Fields

2.73 miles. This gentle walk lets you explore Tillingham, with its pretty village green lined with weatherboarded cottages, and the wide-open expanses of the surrounding Dengie farmland. There's a historic church to investigate, and two historic local pubs serving real ale for a pitstop along the way.
North Fambridge Seawall Stroll

3.1 miles. This walk has a bit of everything – the river Crouch, boats galore, an historic pub and farmland. All within the confines of the village of North Fambridge. Enjoy a walk along the seawall, with houseboats, barges and commercial river traffic, and the wildlife-rich wetlands.
Althorne Views & Vineyards

2.3 miles. Althorne sits on the southern ridge of low hills on the Dengie Peninsula; so you can glimpse both the Blackwater and the Crouch rivers on this gentle walk. Look out too for the grapes growing in the many vineyards that benefit from the area's sunny climate.
