About

The Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of St John the Baptist is an Orthodox monastic community composed of nuns and monks of various nationalities. The monastery was founded by Sophrony Sakharov, later canonised as Saint Sophrony. He studied art in Moscow before becoming a monk at Mount Athos in 1925 and later setting up the monastery in Tolleshunt Knights, where he died in 1992 at the age of 97.

The calm and beauty of the monastery can be enjoyed by pilgrims by prior arrangement, services are open to Orthodox worshippers and the monastery hosts an open day once a year for local visitors to look around and find out more about the work of the community there.
