About

This Grade II Listed building was built in 1880 as a mansion for John Granger Sadd (1828-1900), a local timber merchant and part of the famous Maldon Sadd family.

It was the family home of John Sadd, his wife Mary Ann and their 11 children, one of whom was suffragette and women's rights campaigner Myra Sadd Brown, who is commemorated with a blue plaque on the gate.

The house later became owned by Maldon Borough Council, which turned it into five flats, but it was then sold to the the sisters of a Franciscan Convent in 1955 who were moving into the area from Forest Gate to start a school. The building became a convent and St Francis' School, an Independent Catholic school, opened in 1957. In the 1970s the status of the school changed from Independent to Voluntary Aided and it became known as St Francis RC Primary School. In time, the school moved into adjacent more modern buildings and Mount View returned to private hands.

The premises are not open to the public, but the blue plaque can be seen from West Chase.
