With miles of spectacular and rugged coastline, nature reserves and varied landscapes to discover, the Maldon District is a fantastic place for walking.
We have lots of different walking routes for you to enjoy, taking in the best of our coast, countryside, towns and pubs. From short circuits lasting an hour to longer treks across more challenging terrain, there is a route for every kind of walker from the Sunday stroller to hardcore rambler. Details of these routes can be found at the bottom of this page.

Heybridge Basin
This waterway runs through a largely unspoilt part of rural Essex and connects the county town of Chelmsford with the tidal estuary of the River Blackwater at Heybridge Basin. It is 13.8 miles (22.1 km) long and has 13 locks.

Tollesbury
SALTMARSH COAST WALKING FESTIVAL - 5.8 or 8.9 miles. Tollesbury Wick Marshes is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Tollesbury is now renowned as a yachting centre; once upon a time the marshes were the haunt of smugglers.
Althorne
A pleasant 5.02 mile circular walk around the village of Althorne. The walk includes a short stretch along the River Crouch before turning inland through the fields and over the railway line before arriving in Althorne.
